In Spite of History was an immersive community driven storytelling experience, told from the perspective of those who live in South Dallas. From their experiences with Fair Park and in the community spanning the 1960s to today.

This piece explores cultural assimilation, cross-generational communication & social injustice towards migrants, immigrants and refugees in the United States.
This event is presented in conjunction with MyIGration at the DMA which traces the migration of people, objects, and ideas in art across times and cultures.

Family Dollar is an original work which celebrates the power of community, family, and survival amongst communities on the margins in West Dallas. Based on true stories, it focuses on African American, Latino and Caucasian community members who live in historical shotgun homes on West Main Street.

This immersive experience explored several themes of trauma. During development we collected knowledge and stories around intergenerational, religious, interpersonal relationship, childhood, sexual identity and body shaming. In order to mindfully develop this show we teamed with Embodied Movement Therapy to hold a safe space for community members.

Enter the mind of Ozlem as she processes cultural assimilation, racial terror, and never feeling like she was enough in Turkish or American societies. Witness her memories unfold, sometimes simultaneously, as you meet the different generations of her family.
Testimonies from Dallas immigrants, migrants, and refugees are incorporated into the script.

Then in the dust of one run down home something special was found, a diary. This lead to the first show Family Dollar. The Family Dollar project bound together the artists that worked on it. They felt they had done something special.
That group became what is now Artstillery.
